 | | | Summer's over, football's backAs we lament the ending of the summer, we can rejoice over the fact that the football season is with us once more. The thrill of watching Championship teams like Middlesbrough FC, Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest is like no other- and we are only at the start of the season!
Though they have only won one trophy in their entire history, Middlesbrough FC have only spent two seasons outside of the top two Divisions of English football in their career. The 2003-04 season is largely considered to be their best to date during which they won the League Cup in a final against the Bolton Wanderers. This means that they are as eager as ever to do better than this and get back to some former glory by taking home a cup in the 2009-10 season and getting the promotion they so desperately dream of. Considering they were relegated at the end of last season, they really have something to prove.
Another team that is desperate to return to former glory and get back into the Premiere League are the Magpies of Newcastle United, who until recently had enjoyed great success in the Premier League. The most memorable being their second place position on the League table in 1996 under Manchester United. Since their relegation to the Championship at the end of last season they really have something to prove in 2009-10 and will of course be hoping to win the Cup and get back into the big league. However a certain amount of instability behind the scenes of recent years means Newcastle United have to work even harder now and put all that behind them.
One team that will have to really pull something out of the bag to contend with the likes of Middlesbrough and Newcastle United is Nottingham Forest FC, who are currently sitting in the bottom half of the Championship table. Nottingham Forest’s biggest period of success was undoubtedly in the late 80s and early 90s when they won the League Cup in both 1989 and 1990, but this marked the beginning of the end of an amazing run which was topped off by Clough retiring in 1993. The team are now eager to shine once more in the Championship and may just have the stuff to do it in the 2009-10 season.
Though they don’t have the most illustrious history or many trophies to speak of, Peterborough FC are nevertheless part of the Championship that cannot be discounted and though they are currently sitting close to the bottom of the table, there is plenty of time for them to pull something out of the bag. They have come up from being in League One in 2008 and may still be on the rise with the help of boss Darren Ferguson. And despite the fact that they are not doing the best they could be this season, there are certainly a few teams that they need not worry about just yet; Plymouth Argyle FC being one of them.
Plymouth Argyle’s poor start to the season continued recently as the Championship’s bottom club when they were defeated by Watford at Home Park. Though there is a long way to go for the season, Plymouth Argyle really have to pull something out of the bag if they are going to start becoming contenders for the Cup this season. Their history has seen them bouncing around between the Third Division and Division Two, so certainly being in the Championship since the 2003-04 season is no mean feat, but they are going to need all the support they can get if they are to better than simply that this season in years to come. So who will take the Championship Cup in the 2009-10 season? Well it is too early to tell yet, so just get behind your team and enjoy the ride. | | | |
