Look After Your Prostate

man

Prostate cancer is a big issue for men around the world. Do you know what to look out for if your prostate is infected or diseased? Here's what you can do to ensure that your prostate is healthy and you know the signs.

Prostate cancer is one of the most common health problems experienced by men and yet very few people understand exactly what the prostate is and how it functions inside the body. The prostate itself is a very small organ, it is roughly the size of a small walnut and it surrounds the male urethra.

The main purpose of the prostate is to secrete fluid that carries sperm during ejaculation. Prostate cancer can be relatively difficult to detect due to the fact that there are often very few or no symptoms presented during the early stages of the condition.

Routine Checkups

Many men may start to experience problems with their health; therefore they will visit their doctor and find out that they have prostate cancer and that it has advanced to the stage whereby it cannot be fully treated. To this end, it is recommended that all men have routine checkups with their doctor in order to check the health of their prostate.

This is particularly important for men who are aged over 50, as the chance of developing prostate cancer rises substantially with age. In fact, age has been proven to be the strongest risk factor for the development of prostate cancer, with under-40 cases proving to be very rare. With a quick diagnosis, early signs of prostate cancer can be detected and treatment may be possible.

Noticing Changes

As well as maintaining routine checkups with your doctor, it is vital to make an appointment to see a medical professional if you experience any of the following symptoms; changes in urination, frequent pain in your lower back and legs or if you find blood in your urine or semen. Although the afore listed symptoms do not necessarily indicate that prostate cancer is the cause, it is always best to rule it out for peace of mind and a prostate check will take only a few minutes of your time.

Supplements

Many medical professionals also advocate the use of supplements to help look after the prostate. In particular, boron is a very common vitamin for men to take to help with their prostate health. Recent surveys undertaken by a number of medical institutes indicate that men with a high boron intake level are around 65% less likely to develop prostate cancer than those men who have lower boron levels.

To this end, it can be a good idea to take boron supplements along with maintaining a healthy diet and exercise plan. Boron can be bought in a number of health shops and chemists, or alternatively it can be found in foods such as almonds and raisons. Always ask your doctor for advice before you make radical changes to your diet and also consult with them if you require more advice on supplements.

Diet

By eating a good diet, taking any supplements recommended, avoiding putting negative things into your body i.e.. drinking excessively or smoking, getting regular medical checks and keeping to a good daily exercise plan, you will automatically improve your body functions and this includes improving the health of your prostate.
