carbs

We all need to know how many calories we eat every day but it can sometimes be confusing. So how do you count the calories in what you eat and how can you keep a track on it?

If you can calculate calories in your food you can gain a better understanding of the amount of calories that you are consuming each day. This allows you to make any changes that are required in order for you to lose weight while still sticking to a healthy diet and ensuring optimal health.

Calculating calories in your food need not be a lengthy process, with a few key tips you can easily keep a track of your food intake and calculate calories in your food over a set period of time i.e.. how many calories you eat each day.

How Many Calories?

So, how can you calculate calories in your food?

The first tip is to read the nutritional labels that are printed on the majority of packaged foods. You can usually find a nutritional label on the side of a packaged product; it will normally have a large title along the lines of "Nutrition Facts” at the top of the label, followed by nutritional information about the food contained in the package or tin. One of the first details provided on the list will usually be the number of calories in the food.

When you are looking for calories in your food, using a nutritional label, it is important to remember that the calorie content may be given in different ways i.e.. as a calorie content for the whole item, or per xxx grams; however, in most cases you will be provided with both of these facts.

If you are eating several packaged or tin items as part of a main meal, always remember to add the number of calories for each item together to get a total calorie intake figure. By using nutritional labels, you can not only find out the calories in food, but also other important information such as any vitamins or minerals in the food, and the levels of fat and sugar contained in the food item.

Research Calories Online

Many food items will not have a nutritional label i.e.. a lot of fresh, raw and unprocessed foods do not have labels, or if you eat in restaurants or cafes, the calorie content is not usually provided before you have a meal. In this case, you may want to research food calorie contents in other places such as the internet or by buying special diet informational books or reading leaflets.

Many books are now available to buy that provide information about the number of calories in different food sources. You can either visit your local book shop or library to find these books. Alternatively, your local doctors or health practice may have leaflets that you can pick up for free.

The internet is also brilliant for finding out more about the number of calories that you are eating in your food. Literally hundreds of websites are now available with information about food calorie contents; and if you tend to eat out a lot i.e.. in restaurants or cafes, you may find that eating establishments have information about the calories in their meals on their websites, so take a look before you plan your next meal out.

Managing Your Daily Intake

By learning more about the number of calories contained in your food you can effectively manage your diet on a daily basis. By simply reducing the number of calories that you consume each day you could find yourself losing weight and improving your overall health.

Calorie counting need not be a chore. There are lots of resources out there to help you and if you are still struggling to manage your diet, it can be a great idea to ask your doctor, other medical professional or dietician for further advice.
